Job description

Your mission :
EPFL's strategy for education puts an emphasis on strengthening the development of transversal skills. The Center for Learning Sciences LEARN and the College of Management (CDM), in collaboration with the Teaching support center CAPE and the Discovery Learning Program DLP, set up an initiative to contribute substantially to this strategy. The initiative, which is supported by the LEGO foundation, will implement transversal management skills (e.g. collaboration, project management, innovation management and design thinking) in the curriculum across EPFL within different educational settings and with a strong focus on playful learning by means of tangible objects. As the evidence-based character of innovation in teaching and learning is crucial to us, we will study the learning processes and outcomes during piloting and implementation. This will result in sound evidence to inform future decisions of education leadership in technical universities.

Within this project, we are looking for two learning or education scientists, a project and community manager as well as a pedagogical advisor/designer, which are advertised separately.

The two learning or education scientists will be responsible for literature review, design of empirical studies, data collection and analysis, evaluation and reporting of findings. The research will respond to current issues in engineering, management, and science education, while at the same time providing useful insights for teachers at faculty and university level. The successful candidates will thus collaborate closely with teachers from the College of Management and other sections, as well as with a project and community manager, and a pedagogical advisor. As part of the Center LEARN, they will benefit from the expertise of LEARN affiliated labs and service units.
Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • Provide state-of-the-art / literature work
  • Define research plan and conduct research (study design, data collection instruments, analysis, writing up), including work related to ethical approval
  • Report and present to diverse audiences (EPFL teachers, education leadership EPFL, research community), gather and share best practice within the community of teachers in technical universities
  • Collaborate with EPFL teachers as well as colleagues from relevant research and service units, participate in relevant commissions
  • Contribute to the activities of the Center LEARN (outreach, organisation, operations)

Profile description

Your profile :
  • PhD in learning science or education, or other domains if topic strongly related to learning/education
  • Strong and broad competence of empirical research methods (study designs, data collection and related instruments, data analysis)
  • Experience working on teaching and learning in science, management and/or engineering
  • Understanding of development of transversal and management skills as well as project-based learning would be an advantage.
  • Experience with pedagogical advice, consulting or collaboration with teachers would be an advantage.
  • Self driven and organized, you work well autonomously as well as collaboratively with colleagues
  • Very good mastery of English, good mastery of French, German is a plus

Salary and benefits

Salary: salary according to profile

We offer :
  • Excellent working conditions in a top university
  • Inclusion in a network of internal stakeholders relevant to innovation in education
  • Participation in a project aligned with the strategic orientation of the school and supported by the LEGO foundation
