Job description

Your mission :
The mission of the EssentialTech Centre is to harness science and technology to drive development, support humanitarian action and foster peace.

In this position, you will be responsible for the engineering development of an innovative oxygen concentrator, a medical device intended for use in low resource settings in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. You will drive design activities in accordance with the engineering requirements, with a focus on specific sub-systems, with the goal of creating an integrated technology demonstrator within 12-18 months. The primary goal of this development is to demonstrate the potential for improved longevity and resistance to harsh environmental conditions, a reduced need for maintenance and improved usability.

This role will work 50% time at the Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory (DESL) designing and testing power storage solutions for the oxygen concentrator. The other 50% of the time, the role will be at the EssentialTech Centre focusing on systems design and integration activities.
Main duties and responsibilities include :
As the electrical engineer for the GlobalO2 project your role is to:
1) Drive the design and integration of the electrical systems for an oxygen concentrator, designed for use in harsh environments.
2) Revise and test engineering requirements based on high level requirements for specific engineering sub-systems.
3) Conduct design studies to identify, evaluate and narrow solutions that minimize preventative and corrective maintenance.
4) Conduct design of the power management system of the device, including power storage and conditioning.
5) Procure necessary test equipment supplies and prototyping components.
6) Establish and maintain early-stage design documentation in accordance with generally accepted engineering principles.
7) You may be asked to participate in the teaching activities of the EssentialTech centre.

Profile description

Your profile :
Essential:
  • A doctorate level degree (or equivalent experience) in electrical engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 3 - 5 years industry experience designing, building and testing electromechanical devices, including a knowledge of electrical power systems
  • An innovative thinker, with the ability to communicate design ideas through writing or drawing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. This role will require the successful applicant to create written design documentation and contribute to updates both internally and externally to the Centre, as well as assist in proposal development
  • A capacity for hard work and self-motivation in difficult challenges
  • To be ready to travel to low-income countries as needed
Desirable:
  • Familiarity working within a quality management system a plus
