Description du poste

Your mission :
The MOBOTS group is studying educational robotics since decades, and has developed robots such as Thymio or e-puck, used in various educational contexts. In the last year, the focus has been made on translation of research into real school settings, related to digital education curricular reforms. This implies not only to have robots and related pedagogical tools, but also an approach to support the teaching in the transition towards a more digital education. To implement this translational effort, we have established a strong collaboration with the actors of the learning science environment in Kanton Bern, in particular PHBern.
Main duties and responsibilities include :
This project aims at studying the use of robotics in digital education by playing on a strong contrast between aesthetics and robotics. The use of robotics to create aesthetic installations, merging technology with costumes that move with organic movements, creates pieces of art/design that are far from our robotics stereotypes, and by breaking them it can potentially impact motivation, relevance, sense of belonging and self-efficacy.

We are looking for a versatile learning or educational scientist to accompany our designer in this project of teaching and learning innovation. The researcher in this position develops, applies and adapts learning activities with the support of the PH Bern, and the associated evidence-based methodology for the analysis of the impact of the proposed approach to digital education. The person will be working in Bern, but in constant contact with the main MOBOTS team in Lausanne.

Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • Study the impact of the proposed approach based on robotics and aesthetics, and adapt the methods depending on the phase of innovation (explorative research, design-based research), i.e. plan and conduct empirical studies in collaboration with designers, teachers and didactic experts, collect and analyze data
  • Co-create the learning activity in collaboration with designers, teachers and didactic experts
  • Disseminate results to different audiences:
    • Document the pedagogical innovation in scientific publications;
    • Document results, evaluation method, best practice and recommendations for decision makers and teachers
  • Contribute to the activities of the MOBOTS group (outreach, organisation, operations)

Description du profil

Your profile :
  • PhD in learning science or education, or other domains if topic strongly related to learning/education
  • Experience with teaching and learning in science and engineering
  • Strong and broad competence of empirical research methods (study designs, data collection and related instruments, data analysis)
  • Experience with exploration of educational innovations in the field
  • Experience with pedagogical advice, consulting or collaboration with teachers
  • Experience with educational robotics and project-based learning is a plus
  • Very good mastery of English, good mastery of German, French is a plus
